Why Don't I Get Excited Anymore? Understanding the Loss of Joy | Inner Fire Counselling

If things that used to excite you just feel flat now, you're not broken and you're not alone. Here's what's likely going on and one small step back toward feeling something.

You used to look forward to things. A trip, a game release, a project, plans with friends. Now most of it just feels... flat. Not sad, necessarily just muted. And that's honestly a harder thing to explain to people than sadness is, because there's no single event to point to.

This isn't a character flaw, and it doesn't mean something is permanently broken in you. A reduced capacity to feel pleasure from things that used to light you up is a really common response to sustained stress, burnout, or just too many demands stacked on top of each other for too long without a real reset.

Why "Just Do More Fun Stuff" Doesn't Work

Forcing yourself to do the things that used to excite you, expecting the old feeling to show up on command, usually backfires it just proves the point ("see, nothing works anymore"). The reward system needs to be rebuilt gradually, not demanded into working.

Try This Today: Low-Stakes Behavioral Activation

Pick one small activity that used to bring you some enjoyment doesn't have to be the big one, just something low-effort. Schedule it for a specific time today, regardless of whether you feel like it.

Then, instead of grading the whole experience ("did I have fun or not"), just notice: was there any flicker of something even 5%? That's the signal you're looking for, not a full return to how things used to feel.

Stack a few of these small, consistent moves, short walks, a regular sleep window, tiny doses of things you used to enjoy and the capacity tends to come back gradually. It's rebuilt, not willed back into existence.
