Internal Locus of Control: How to Stop Feeling Powerless | Inner Fire Counselling

Feel like life just happens to you? Learn what locus of control actually is, why it's learned not innate, and one exercise to start taking your power back today.

Ever notice how some guys seem to just handle whatever gets thrown at them, while the same setback sends someone else into a spiral of "of course this happened to me"?

That's not a personality difference. It's locus of control — and it's learned, not hardwired.

External locus of control is the belief that outcomes happen to you — bosses, traffic, bad luck, other people's decisions. Internal locus of control is the belief that your actions meaningfully shape what happens next. Neither is a fixed trait you're born with. It's a pattern built from repetition — every time you either took ownership of a moment or handed it off to "just the way things are," you reinforced one belief system over the other.

The good news: if it's learned, it's trainable.

Why This Matters

People with a stronger internal locus of control report more resilience, better follow-through on goals, and lower anxiety in the face of setbacks — not because their lives are easier, but because their brain's default question after something goes wrong is "what's my move?" instead of "why does this always happen to me?"

Try This Today: Responsibility Framing

Next time something goes sideways — a missed deadline, a fight with your partner, a bad workout — ask yourself one question:

"What part of this was actually within my influence?"

Not all of it will be. That's fine. Then do the second half: replace the passive sentence in your head with an active one.

  • Instead of "I can't believe this happened""Here's what I can do next."

  • Instead of "There's nothing I can do about it""Here's the one thing that is in my control right now."

That's it. You don't need a life overhaul. You need reps. Every time you do this, you're literally reinforcing a different neural pattern. Which is exactly what the next post is about.
